About
Lewis County was created from parts of Harrison County by an act of the Virginia General Assembly on December 18, 1816, and is located in the center of the wild and wonderful state of West Virginia. The county is named in honor of Colonel Charles Lewis (1733-1774), who was killed at the decisive Battle of Point Pleasant of Lord Dunmore's War in 1774. The county seat is Weston, which was incorporated by the West Virginia Legislature in 1913.
William Hacker, Thomas Hughes, Jesse Hughes, John Radcliff, William Radcliff and John Brown were the first Englishmen to set foot in present-day Lewis County. They explored the area in 1769. Later that year, John Hacker built a cabin just to the south of the present-day Berlin. He is credited as Lewis County's first permanent European settler. John and William Radcliff built cabins not far from Hackers cabin in 1770. This settlement became known as Hackers Creek. Other early permanent settlers in the county included Jesse Hughes, John Whendy, Francis Tibbs and Daniel Veach.
Other famous settlements include Jackson's Mill and Stonewall Jackson Lake. Jackson's Mill is the boyhood home of Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson, who joined the Confederacy during the Civil War and became immortalized as "Stonewall" at the First Battle of Bull Run. Stonewall Jackson Lake was commissioned as part of the Flood Control Act of 1966 and completed in 1990. The lake was named after General Stonewall to commemorate his ingenuity during the War and his history in Lewis County.
The chief industries of the county are natural gas, lumber and manufacturing. Lewis County is also known for its abundance of agricultural products. Lewis County is connected by two 4-lane highways and is a central hub for industry. Additionally Lewis County has access to an affordable power supply and an abundance of water resources.
